Emotional Intelligence is one of the most essential ingredients for successful leaders and successful people in all walks of life. Research by the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) found that the primary causes of executive derailment involve deficiencies in emotional competence. The three main challenges are difficulty in handling change, inability to work well in a team, and poor interpersonal relations. The Carnegie Institute of Technology research indicated that 85% of financial success was due to skills in "human engineering", personality, and ability to communicate, negotiate, and lead. Only 15% was due to technical ability. Once again, the message is clear: people skills or emotional intelligence skills are critical for success. They can move the agenda along, read the climate of the group, recognize individuals and create harmony. Those with lower EQ may ignore or misread interpersonal communication or body language, explode if things don't go their way, or make others feel uncomfortable without even realizing it.As a coach, EQ is an important element we focus on in developing strong leaders. Building EQ enables leaders to win over their team rather than using a more authoritative approach. The good news is these skills are measurable and can be improved. There are a variety of good emotional intelligence assessments, tools and books. At Rising Stars, we use the TTI EQ assessment, often in combination with Behaviors (DISC) and Motivators that identify why you do what you do. The EQ assessment measures five key areas of emotional intelligence:Self Awareness - the ability to understand your emotions, moods and drives and how they affect othersSelf Regulation - the ability to control or redirect disruptive impulses and moods and think before actingEmpathy - the ability to understand the emotional makeup of other peopleMotivation - a passion to work for reasons that go beyond money or status and a propensity to pursue goals with energy and persistenceSocial Skills - a proficiency in managing relationships and building networksAre you interested in understanding and improving your EQ?
