The legendary, late Steve Jobs said, "Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle."Those words hit home and inspire. I wake up feeling so grateful for the opportunity to help leaders and their organizations learn, grow and thrive to be their best and achieve amazing results. I love the work of coaching and developing others and people tell me it shows. Do you feel a twinkle in your eyes or in your soul as you think about the work you’ll do this week? Does it make your heart happy to reflect on your accomplishments at the end of a busy day?If you don’t feel this way, as Steve said, “Don’t settle.” It may be time to reflect about what you love to do and how you can parlay that love into accomplishing great work. At one point my career felt stymied, my boss was a micromanaging, destructive leader. In reflecting on the situation, a fellow coach asked a powerful question, “Can your bright light shine in this situation?” Realizing the answer was no, encouraged me to find a role and environment that better suited my needs and enabled me to thrive.Love is a word we don’t often use in the workplace. Yet, it belongs there. When people bring their love and passion to the workplace it makes a tremendous difference. One healthcare organization asks candidates, “Will you love our patients?” How’s that for a question that determines compassion, engagement and ownership?Do you love your employees, leaders, organization, work? Do you believe in the mission of your organization? Does it truly matter to you? You work hard, you work smart, you give a significant portion of your life to your career. Are you making a living or making a life? If you are feeling the love and doing great work, celebrate! If your job simply represents a paycheck, think about what you would truly love to do, then figure out how to do it. You’ll love the difference you make and how you feel when you are living a life you love, doing work you love so your bright light shines through to all those around you.CelebrationsHappy National #NursesWeek (May 6-12) to all nurses and nurse leaders.
