What Have You Learned Lately?

September 22, 2021

OK, maybe I'm a bit biased, as someone who loves to learn and teach. Yet, the experts back me up. Peter Drucker, preeminent American management consultant and author said, "We now accept the fact that learning is a lifelong process of keeping abreast of change. And the most pressing task is to teach people how to learn." In healthcare and many other industries today, the pace of change is exponential, as technology, artificial intelligence, rising costs, increased expectations, staffing shortages and more compete for finite time and resources. How should a leader prioritize? Lead? Gain trust and build engagement with an unclear vision of the future? The key, I believe is to be a lifelong learner.Gone are the days when a person could graduate from college and feel that their education was complete. There are many ways to stay abreast of industry changes, including belonging to one or more professional associations such as the American College of Healthcare Executives, or the American Organization for Nursing Leadership, reading industry publications, networking with other leaders, attending webinars, conferences and courses. Many leaders work with an executive coach like me to focus on their specific areas of growth. We use an assessment to determine your values, behavioral style, driving forces and emotional intelligence, then set key goals and create a plan to achieve them. A coach provides the confidential thought partner to think things through and hold you accountable for moving toward your desired goals. The key is doing one or more of these on a regular basis so you're aware of what challenges are arising and can develop strategies to deal with them.I'm very proud of the healthcare leaders who graduated from the Arizona Institute or Healthcare Leadership 10 month leadership development program I facilitate. https://RisingStarsLLC.com/AIHL We covered a wide variety of leadership topics that developed increased self awareness, emotional intelligence, ability to lead change, inspirational leadership, organizational culture, talent management, finance for non-financial leaders, strategic thinking, healthcare advocacy, presentation skills and more. Each leader received executive coaching and group coaching where the participants learned they are not alone in the challenges they face.During our closing session last Friday each person made a commitment for how they will keep their learning alive. So... what have you learned lately? How will you continue to develop and lead your team through all the changes and opportunities that lie ahead?
